Alongside many British workers, trades unionists, and socialists keen to help the Spanish defend their Republic from General Franco's Fascist forces. Homage to Catalonia describes Orwell's experience in the Spanish Civil War. There are three main strands in it: his experiences at the front, his experiences in street fighting in Barcelona, and his Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell George Orwell's famous 1938 account of the Spanish Revolution and Civil War, from his point of view as a volunteer in the POUM militia. Though the POUM were socialists, he wrote "as far as my purely personal preferences went I would have liked to join the Anarchists." Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's account of his time spent as as soldier on the lines of the Spanish Civil War, fighting Franco. He arrived in Catalonia in December of 1936 and spent the winter on the lines, returning to Barcelona in 1937 just before the street fighting in April (now known as the Barcelona May Days ) and then returning to the lines until he was injured by a sniper's bullet.

Though the POUM were socialists, he wrote "as far as my purely personal preferences went I would have liked to join the Anarchists." Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his time fighting in the Spanish Civil war, as part of the POUM militia (The Workers' Party of Marxist Unification) of the Republican army. The experience he had, solidified his political outlook. Kopp was George Orwell's brigade commander at the Aragon front and is mentioned in Orwell's autobiographical account of the Civil War, Homage to Catalonia (1938), and towards the end of the book, when Orwell describes the Barcelona May Days.
