THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE KAYAK. The kayak – or ‘qajaq’ as it is called in Greenland – is an invention from old days that has been an essential piece of hunting equipment for Inuits in Greenland and the rest of Arctic North America. Kayaks are an intrinsic feature of Inuit culture, used for hunting, fishing, travel, and recreation, employed by generations of indigenous people across the Arctic, from Alaska to Greenland and Labrador. Noah Nochasak (right) works with fellow kayak builder Fred Randall of Georgetown, Maine. Inuit hunters, who usually propelled their kayaks with double-bladed paddles, sometimes wore watertight jackets that were fastened to the rim of the opening in which they sat. Fastened to the deck, under thongs stretched across it, were the hunter's weapons, including harpoon (the most important) and lance. to historical Inuit, the Caribou-Iglulik kayak design might be seen as quintessentially Inuit.

2016-05-04 Hunting marine mammals such as seals called for real teamwork so that the Inuit could spot them, follow them, kill them and cut them up. In winter, dogs would sniff out the mammals’ breathing holes in the ice pack and then the hunters would lie in wait, and as soon as a seal came up for air it was harpooned.
